One place I worked at had these "USB Messaging Flag"
That would light up when you got a message. Could tell you had a message on your computer from across the shop, they were awesome. Integration for these would be amazing!

I believe much of this could be handled with the evolution of the text messaging, integrating much of what other text messaging platforms have for notifications. In theory Protractor could integrate colored indicators in a part of the Ribbon for text messages from Tech's, Foreman, Managment, and Porters.
